Key points
1. Types of assets
- Cash and savings — low risk, low return, easy to reach. For money you need within a year.
- Fixed-income (treasury bills, bonds) — a little more return, money tied up for a period. For one to five years.
- Property — can grow over many years but costly to buy and slow to sell. Five years or more.
- Shares (e.g. companies on the Nigerian Exchange) — can grow and pay dividends, but prices rise and fall. Five years or more.

2. Risk, time and spreading out
- Higher possible return comes with higher risk of loss.
- Only put money in long-term assets if you won't need it for years.
- Don't put everything in one place — spread it out (diversify).
- Build your emergency fund first.
- Your skills are your biggest asset — investing in learning raises your income.
